Niue proudly lacks passive entertainment. There is a lot to do, but your active involvement is needed.
Of course, you can just lie around under the frangipani and listen to the ocean crashing against the reef. Or watch breaching whales from the comfort of a cocktail bar. These and many more pure pleasures are abundant.
But there are none of the cinemas, shopping malls, casino’s, games parlours or other distractions that mass tourism demands.
Nightlife
There are regular dances mainly on Friday or Saturday nights, and visitors are welcome.
Claytons Bar, in Alofi, and Island Style in Avatele, are always popular and open almost all night during Friday and Saturday. Both feature great music and good bars.
Hikutavake has the Matapa Bar, which has just opened new premises.
Washaway Cafe in Avatele is also open late, but only for food and drinks. And there is also the Alofi Rugby Club and the Pacific Way Bar.
Additionally there is X-Bar in Hakupu Village and
Sails Bar in Makefu Village.
Check with the Niue Tourism Office to learn about what's on, where and when.
Traditional Festive Nights
These large events are less common, but normally coincide with a political event or sponsorship drive. Highly recommended, but won't take place without a lot of advance notice. Check with the Niue Tourism Office. |
