Here’s another aspect of Niue that sets it apart from almost everywhere else.
Whale Encounters
It is impossible to state how incredible these are - your personal reaction will overwhelm you. Experience a sample of this by watching the video, and then imagine seeing this live yourself. It's possible, in Niue.
Elsewhere in the world, you can spend hours chasing them around the open ocean. But here on Niue, the whales practically come to you.
Many Humpback whales, both pods and individuals, shelter in the bays around Avatele and Tamakautoga.
These are very deep waters, and so whales can often be seen, between June to October, for hours on end, a mere 50 metres! (150 feet!) from the waters edge.
We don't know of any other place in the world where humans can get this close to whales without leaving land.
You can stay dry and watch them from anywhere along our southwest coast, or the comfort of the Cliffhanger Bar at the Matavai Resort.
Because of the very low levels of people visiting Niue, it’s even possible to go swimming, snorkeling or diving with the whales.
If you’re brave, Niue Dive can get you out nearer to them. Naturally, getting this close carries risks that you must accept responsibility for, but to many people it’s the best thing they’ve ever done.
Dolphin Encounters Dolphins are permanent residents, and much safer to swim with – when they are there!
Niue Dive can also take you out to see them, but this is not a retail experience – ‘dolphins on demand’ is something that only happens in zoos. Ours are free to roam & have habits that make finding them reasonably easy.
