Niue welcomes cyclists
The mix of sealed roads and dirt tracks, slow and courteous drivers, and very little traffic makes Niue a safe haven for riders.
The heat will be the biggest risk, so take water!
What better way to savour village life than to amble through on a bicycle?
In season, you can coast along beneath avenues of fragrant frangipani with the ocean peeking trough the forest, and perhaps stop to explore the reef, play with kids, or chat with women weaving in the shade.
Bikes can be hired from car rental businesses, although some motels and hotels have them available for guests.
Rally of the Rock
For the adventurous, the fit and the fun-loving, there’s an annual race that has you speeding down bush tracks and along sealed roads. It takes place in June and everyone is welcome. For more details, visit www.rallyrock.nu.
In 2010 the Rally of the Rock is on Monday 7 June, Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Also the following Saturday 12 June is the Hakupu Village Show Day and the Village Council is staging a 100k cycle race. Stay on and truly bike Niue, see if you can cover the 170+k of bush tracks in that time plus relax and enjoy.
