Fishing with Willie

The sun was barely rising beyond the coconut palms when we boarded Willies boat for our first Niue fishing adventure. We were after a wahoo - but actually, in my mind, we were after anything bigger than a whitebait because that would take place as our largest fish ever. A tuna, a wahoo, a sailfish... A parrot fish! It didn't matter.

We had our first strike about 20 minutes into the trip. By the way the line smoked, we could tell it was a whopper! after 25 minutes of fighting and one very sore arm, the monster got away. Willie said he it would have been a 35 kg wahoo. Bugger.

Undefeated, we carried on...

10 minutes later, another strike. This time, we had more luck, it took the short line and so pulling it in had to be easier! 5 minutes later we had a great big wahoo sitting in the boat. Willie bashed it on the head with what looked like a mini baseball bat - and the line was in for another shot...

Unfortunately, our next fish looked too tasty for the sharks and they got a free lunch - but it didn't matter because the wahoo we got provided us with more than enough gobble! And boy, was it delicious!
